What is Hot Yoga?

Many people use “hot” and “Bikram” interchangeably. However, while all Bikram Yoga is hot, not all hot yoga is Bikram. Hot yoga is a more intense yoga performed in a room heated above normal room temperature. It can range in temperature between 26.6–37.7°C

People practice Bikram yoga in a room at 40.5°C with 40% humidity. It consists of 26 poses and a sequence of two breathing exercises. Hot yoga uses the concept of heat and exertion to release toxins through sweat. It is less strict with the heat and humidity. The postures — asanas — and sequence can vary from class to class, depending on the yoga instructor’s preparations.

People trained in other styles can also facilitate Hot Yoga. Bikram-trained teachers can only facilitate Bikram Yoga classes.

Other types of Yoga include, but are not limited to:

  • Vinyasa Yoga
  • Hot Yin Yoga
  • Hot Power Yoga
  • Hot Fusion Yoga

What is Pilates?

Pilates came into existence in 1932 thanks to Joseph Pilates who was looking for a way to strengthen his body, despite suffering from a range of illnesses such as asthma and rickets.  Pulling on the teachings of Yoga, martial arts, Zen meditation and Greek and Roman exercise, he began by developing a method to help soldiers during WWI rehabilitate post-injury. His experiences led to the development of his distinctive method of physical and mental conditioning. Fast forward to today, Pilates is a low-impact, muscle-engaging workout that focuses on smaller muscle groups and high repetitions to build strength and endurance.

Pilates exercises typically flow from ‘five essentials’ – breathing, cervical alignment, rib and scapular stabilization, pelvic mobility and utilizing the transversus abdominis.

The Transformative Power of Hot Yoga and Pilates

Hot Yoga and Pilates, when combined, offer a dynamic duo of physical and mental benefits. Let’s learn more!

Physical Benefits:

  1. Enhanced Flexibility and Mobility: The heat from hot yoga loosens tight muscles, increases flexibility, and improves range of motion. This is crucial for maintaining agility, balance, and preventing injuries during aging.
  2. Detoxification and Cellular Renewal: Sweating profusely in a hot environment helps eliminate toxins and impurities from the body. This detoxification process can lead to clearer skin, reduced inflammation, and improved overall health.
  3. Boosted Immune System: Regular exposure to heat can strengthen your immune system. Hot yoga and Pilates can help be a defense against infections and illnesses more effectively.
  4. Accelerated Metabolism: Working out in a heated environment can increase your metabolic rate, leading to more efficient calorie burning and weight management.
  5. Improved Cardiovascular Health: Consistent practice of Hot Yoga and Pilates can lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease, and improve cardiovascular health.
  6. Stronger Bones and Muscles: The weight-bearing exercises in Pilates, combined with the heat and flexibility of Hot Yoga, can help increase bone density and muscle strength. This is particularly beneficial for women as they age to decrease or slow down the propensity of muscle atrophy and bone loss.
  7. Pain Relief: Hot Yoga and Pilates can alleviate or reduce the impact of chronic pain conditions such as chronic back pain, types of arthritis, and fibromyalgia. The heat can help relax muscles and reduce inflammation.

Mental and Emotional Benefits:

  1. Stress Reduction and Mental Clarity: The combination of physical exertion and deep breathing in Hot Yoga and Pilates can significantly reduce stress and anxiety. Regular practice can improve your mood, boost your energy levels, and enhance your mental focus.
  2. Improved Sleep Quality: Regular exercise, combined with focused relaxation techniques in Yoga and Pilates, can promote better sleep quality and help you fall asleep faster.
  3. Increased Self-Awareness and Mindfulness: Both practices encourage mindfulness and self-awareness, allowing the creation of a mind-body connection for those who are new and bring experienced Yogis to a deeper level of mindfulness.

Ready to Experience the Transformation?

To reap the full benefits of Hot Yoga and Pilates, it is essential to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially before, during, and after your practice to replenish the body’s need for water and prevent dehydration.
